The Beeghly College of Education encourages
students interested in the teaching profession to review current and projected job market hiring
and salary trends in their anticipated teaching field(s) and consider this information when
making their own "fork in the road" decisions. To assist students in obtaining useful job
market information, the College provides the following informational links for your examination and
careful reflection.
- Occupational
Outlook Handbook - How does the teaching job market compare to
others? This publication covers many occupations; we assume of most
interest to you would be the electronic section linked here entitled
"School Teachers: Kindergarten, Elementary, and Secondary." Once you
get to the Web page, click on the 'Job Outlook' tab for market
information . . . click on the 'Earnings' tab. While you are
there, look around and compare teaching to the other occupations
listed in the handbook.
- Salaries for
Teachers in Ohio - How do teachers' salaries compare across Ohio?
The Ohio Education Association (OEA) compiles comprehensive teacher salary data
for all school districts in Ohio. Click on this link to examine this data. Note
that your starting teaching salary can vary by as much as $10,000 depending on the
locations of the school districts. Given this information, would it be
desirable for you to consider relocating within the state when you search for
your first teaching position?
- State
Education Agencies - If you are considering relocating, you need to know the
the teaching requirements and job outlook in other states. Use this link as a starting
place to obtain information regarding this possibility. This Educational Resources Organization
Directory (EROD) site posts the snail mail addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and Web site
locations of the State Departments of Education in the 50 States and in the American Territories.
- Teaching Overseas - Interested
in teaching outside the United States? There are many "services" that facilitate your placement in
overseas teaching positioins. Once such service is the International Schools Services who offers K-12
educators teaching opportunities in private American international schools abroad. Be sure to check
out all aspects of any service you use. Often fees and other costs are involved. A minimum of an undergraduate
degree, licensure to teach in a state, and 2 or 3 years of teaching experience are typical requirements
for applicants.
-
The American Association for Employment in Education (AAEE)
- What is the current job market like? AAEE prepares annual reports
(an executive summary as well as a full research report) on teacher
supply and demand in the United States. From surveys returned
by participating institutions, they "score" each teaching field
(teachers are in surplus, teachers are in shortage, teaching field
a balance between supply and demand) by geographic region. If
this information interests you, contact the organization or YSU's
Office of Career and Counseling Services because they have the
most recent data from AAEE. The Office of Career and Counseling
Services also has a copy of the AAEE publication, "The Job Search
Handbook for Educators".
In the Office of Career and Counseling Services, Joanne Gallagher is Career Services Coordinator for
BCOE students. Use the links to the left to explore the services
provided by the Office and to contact Joanne.
Remember, even the best executed career plans include less than
accurate assessments from time to time (see the Gary Cooper quote
at the left) . . .
and, as illustrated
by the observations attributed to Karl Marx's mom, . . . not everyone around
you may be happy with, and supportive of, your decisions . . .
Good luck in formulating . . . and reformulating . . . your career decisions.
