SUSAN LEONE
2003-2004 Outstanding Alumnus - Department of Teacher Education

Dr. Susan Leone was born in Cleveland, Ohio in November of 1949. The following November, she was adopted by two beautiful Italian-American people, Charlie and Mary Testa of Campbell, Ohio.

There Susan enjoyed a wonderful childhood in a small steel mill community. Attending Campbell City Schools, she graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in 1967 and came to Youngstown State University in the fall of 1967.

With a loving family always supportive, she decided to become an elementary teacher. She received her Bachelors Degree in Education at Youngstown State University in 1972, a Masters Degree in Education with a reading specialty, also from YSU in 1989, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction in 1994 from the University of Akron. Her dissertation focused on written retellings.

In 2002, Susan received a principals certificate at Westminster College. She has served as a Language Arts Instructional Consultant at the Mahoning County Educational Service Center. Dr. Leone is employed as a Part Time Faculty member in the Department of Teacher Education.
